Greetings, fellow yarnaholics!
And Welcome, Spring!! It is May, time for the showers (and the cold weather!) to go away and bring the spring flowers!
Special thanks to Barbara Bobo for the great window done for April Fool’s Day. Hope you got a chance to see the yarns created by spinning unconventional fibers, and maybe try your luck at guessing which articles were made from what fiber sources. Opens your eyes for sources of spinning materials, kind of makes you appreciate those pioneer women, doesn’t it?
With the coming of warmer weather, and spending more time outdoors, we partners at Ewetopia Fiber Arts Boutique have been brainstorming with great ideas to keep you dropping in to see us. We have many projects and classes that are short and sweet, portable for working on at soccer or t-ball games, and great for stashing away towards next year’s Christmas presents.
Have you ever tried needle-felting? When you are in the shop, check out the bluebird Kay Bertrand made using the needle-felting technique. It is easy, and quick to complete, and even youngsters do a great job with it. Kay is teaching a class on Thursday, May 8 at 6 pm here in the shop. Cost is $25, you need a needle which can be purchased at the shop, and other materials will be provided at the class. Call to reserve a place for you and your children!
Speaking of children, we need to brag on our group of students who attend our Kid’s Knitting on the first and third Friday’s of each month at 5:30-6:30pm. They are all knitting projects of some difficulty, some on dishcloths, many on the felted mittens and some on even more difficult projects. These boys and girls range from 5 to 13 years old, and are such fun to work with! They are focused, extremely well-mannered, and use the time well to work on their own projects or to help one another. This is open to all students, free, and no preregistration is required. Have a school-age child who is interested? We’d love to have them join us.
Each month, usually the second Friday of the month at 5:30 til 8:30pm, we have Kids’ Night Out, a pizza party with knitting or a special project planned. Our May event on Friday May 9, has the youngsters trying their hand at weaving. We will have looms set up for them to learn all about this craft, and of course pizza and drinks will be provided. Although many of our kids are “regulars,” there is still room for more participants if you have a youngster interested. For the 3 hour event, cost is $10 and covers pizza and beverage. Students bring their own knitting projects, and we can help them choose a project if they don’t have one. Preregistration is necessary so we know how much pizza to order.
Charity knitting is back! By popular demand, we have scheduled the third Sunday of each month between 2 and 4 pm to gather together and knit for local distribution. Yarns can be donated to be used for charity knitting at any time; they will be distributed only during the charity knitting time slot to those who request donated yarns. Projects completed with donated yarns should be returned to the store. Join us on May 18 to knit for love of people!
Upper Valley Fiber Guild is holding a workshop during their May meeting, on Saturday, May 3 at 10 am at Ewetopia in the downstairs classroom. All are welcome to join this workshop, where we will be learning new weaves and trying out a variety of floor and table looms. Attendees will leave with a notebook of instructions and weave samples. Cost is $20, which includes materials for the workshop. Usually a short business meeting is held first, then show and tell, a brown bag lunch, then the workshop is held. Questions? Call Kay Bertrand at the shop.

Fiber Fest is here again! The 2nd annual Upper Valley Fiber Fest will be held at the Miami County Fairgrounds on Saturday, May 10 from 9am to 6pm. Here you will find vendors from several surrounding states, live animals, and demonstrations of fiber art technique. This is a free event for the public, and a great way to meet new people who share our passion for the fiber arts. For more information, visit Ewetopia’s website and click on the Upper Valley Fiber Festival link www.ewetopia.net.
Sox on the Square, our monthly sock club, was a huge success for its debut. There are close to 20 of us soxy ladies making the first pair from Rainforest colors of Opal Sock yarn, soon to complete the pair and receive a small gift. We anxiously await the second meeting, held on the first Sunday each month, (May 4) from 2 to 4 pm where the pattern and yarn selections will be unveiled! Come join in the fun. Fee is $5 per month. Be first in line to purchase special sock yarn before it is stocked on the shelves!
